California initiative would expand DNA gathering, restrict early parole
A Democratic lawmaker on Monday proposed a ballot measure that would bar certain convicted rapists and sex traffickers from earning credits to reduce their sentences and expand the list of crimes for which a perpetrator’s DNA is collected. Assemblyman Jim Cooper of Elk Grove said he’s taking the measure to California voters because Democratic leaders repeatedly stonewalled legislation to enact similar changes.

California could soon get access to more inmate DNA
A proposed ballot initiative attempts to keep prisoners locked up, and get more DNA into state databases. In 2014, voters passed a measure that would cut California’s prison population, by letting some criminals out of prison early, while reducing some violent crimes from felonies to misdemeanors. California lawmakers, law enforcement, and prosecutors want to reverse that. Shirley Derryberry waited four decades for closure.

LAPD union calls for ‘urgent action’ on Hepatitis A vaccines after officer contracts virus
A Los Angeles police union says there’s an urgent need to acquire Hepatitis A vaccines for more than 1,000 police officers – a need brought into sharp focus after an officer recently contracted the virus that causes liver disease and inflammation. Craig Lally, president of the Los Angeles Police Protective League, wrote a letter to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday asking for “urgent action to ensure the safety of the approximately 1,600 police officers identified by the LAPD who are most at risk of being exposed to Hepatitis A due to their work assignment.”

LA law enforcement celebrate state-of-the-art crime lab
When it comes to solving crimes and catching killers, it’s often science that helps make the case for investigators. On Monday, some of Los Angeles’ top law enforcement leaders showed off the high-tech tools in L.A. County’s crime lab for the 10th anniversary of the facility. The Hertzberg-Davis Forensic Science Center is the largest municipal crime lab in the nation and is a state-of-the-art CSI facility on the campus of Cal State LA.

Parker Center, home to police dramas real and fictional, comes nearer to demolition
Parker Center, the famed Los Angeles Police Department headquarters known for its roles in both cop shows and real-life dramas, is taking another step toward demolition. The city’s Bureau of Engineering will hold a meeting Wednesday, inviting interested contractors to an information-outreach event to discuss the scope of work for the demolition of Parker Center.

Students pledge to end campus bullying
Approximately 1,000 Santa Monica Boulevard Charter School students clad in orange shirts raised their right hands and swore not to participate in or allow bullying during a ceremony on Tuesday on the school’s playground. The event coincided with National Bullying Prevention Month in October and Unity Day on Oct. 25. Orange is the designated color for unity and bullying prevention, and the sea of orange on the playground showed the students are getting behind the message.

LA takes step to ban torches, shields, pepper spray and more at protests, rallies
Pepper spray, open flame torches, certain types of signage and other objects that have been known to be used as weapons at protests and rallies will be banned under an ordinance tentatively approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles City Council. The council voted 13-1 to prohibit a dozen categories of items, ranging from everyday objects such as pieces of wood and glass bottles to items that are clearly weapons, such as firearms, knives and swords.

Judge postpones decision on whether adoptive parents of slain cop killer should lose their home
A federal judge on Friday postponed for one week a decision on whether the adoptive parents of the man who killed Sacramento sheriff’s Deputy Robert French should lose their home because he skipped out on his bail last summer. U.S. District Judge Susan Illston agreed to the delay after the attorney for the family of Thomas Littlecloud did not show up for a scheduled hearing on the forfeiture of their Castro Valley home.

The suspect told police ‘give me a lawyer dog.’ The court says he wasn’t asking for a lawyer.
When a friend says, “I’ll hit you up later dog,” he is stating that he will call again sometime. He is not calling the person a “later dog.” But that’s not how the courts in Louisiana see it. And when a suspect in an interrogation told detectives to “just give me a lawyer dog,” the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled that the suspect was, in fact, asking for a “lawyer dog,” and not invoking his constitutional right to counsel.

GM settles California suit over alleged defects concealment
General Motors has agreed to a $13.9 million settlement with Orange County, California, after prosecutors accused the auto giant of concealing serious safety defects to avoid costly recalls and part replacements. The lawsuit, filed in 2014, accused GM of deceptive business practices and unfair competition.

Man convicted of triggering crash with stolen stove that killed L.A. County deputy sentenced to 16 years to life
A 41-year-old man who allowed a stolen stove to fly off the back of his pickup truck on the 91 Freeway in Anaheim, triggering a crash that killed a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy, was sentenced Friday to 16 years to life in prison, authorities said. Cole Allen Wilkins, of Long Beach, was found guilty last month of second-degree murder in connection to the fatal July 2006 crash, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Montebello woman charged after allegedly defrauding 32 victims in immigration services scheme
A Montebello woman has been charged with 48 felony counts after she allegedly impersonated government officials and defrauded more than 30 victims seeking immigration services, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors filed an arrest warrant Wednesday for Romina Aida Zadorian, 48, for fraudulent immigration services provided at a business at her residence.

CHP officer arrested on suspicion of distributing child porn: Allegedly used social media app for crime
A California Highway Patrol officer made his initial court appearance Friday on charges of possessing and distributing child pornography. Arraignment was rescheduled to Dec. 12 for Robert Tamayo, 37, who was charged Thursday with one count each of distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography.

There’s not much the state of California does efficiently. LA County plans ‘game-changing’ village of health services for homeless
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to create a “village” of services for homeless individuals and others in need on the LAC+USC Medical Center campus. Hope for homeless: Will they work cleaning streets?
A Los Angeles City Council committee Wednesday will consider a plan to employ homeless people to clean litter and trash from streets, sidewalks and alleys. According to the City Council motion that would create a pilot program, the city receives an average of 200 requests per day through its 311 mobile app and website regarding dumping, debris and other trash-related nuisances, and trash is also consistently one of the three top reported issues to 311.

Jack Kirschke’s double-murder was Long Beach’s ‘Trial of the Century’
It’s been 50 years now since Long Beach’s Trial of the Century. Jack and Elaine Kirschke ran with the city’s fastest crowd, seen at all the right scenes and living the sweet, good life in their waterfront home on Rivo Alto Canal in Naples. He was an L.A. County deputy district attorney, chief of the Downey office, and an officer in the Long Beach Yacht Club. His wife was a former model and fashion designer.

Foes of jail construction plan protest in downtown L.A.
About two dozen demonstrators interrupted the Board of Supervisors meeting inside the Los Angeles County Hall of Administration on Tuesday to protest a jail construction plan in the county. The activists, bound together by gray plastic shackles, stood up and started speaking over the supervisors, asking them to declare a moratorium on the jail project.

Study finds elevated levels of dangerous chemicals in Porter Ranch residents
An independent health study released earlier this month showed elevated levels of carcinogens in residents living near Aliso Canyon, the site of the massive 2015 natural gas blowout in Los Angeles’ San Fernando Valley. Dr. Jeffrey Nordella, a family practice physician in Porter Ranch, near Aliso Canyon, tested 120 patients just after the gas leak was capped in February 2016 and followed up months later.

Lawsuits, costs continue to mount in gas leak
Two years after a natural gas well blew open near Porter Ranch, the cost of the nation’s largest-ever accidental gas leak continues to mount. So do the number of lawsuits it’s triggered, according to Southern California Gas Company’s third quarter report, released this week. The cost of the Aliso Canyon gas leak is up to $841 million as of Sept. 30. That’s up $9 million dollars over the last three months, the report said.

Santa Monica number one in property crime among California cities of similar size
Santa Monica continued a trend last year that left California cities with similarly sized populations far behind: It ranked number one in property crime. The seaside city had more property crime than a dozen cities roughly the same population total of 93,921 people, according to an analysis by The Lookout of the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report released last month.

California’s gas tax on its way up
In the State of California, there are a variety of sources of funding for transportation purposes, including funding for the state highway system and the local streets and roads system. These funding sources include fuel excise taxes, commercial vehicle weight fees, local transactions and use taxes, and federal funds. Because of legislation earlier this year, SB 1 (Beall), motorists’ gas taxes will be increased to address deferred maintenance on the state highway system and the local streets and roads system.

Man who fired at deputies before being shot in Compton was released from prison weeks before: LASD
A 20-year-old man who was shot after allegedly firing on deputies while they conducted a traffic stop in Compton had been released from prison weeks earlier, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Friday. Ricardo Cendejes got out of prison on Sept. 26 under Post-Release Community Supervision, according to a sheriff’s news release.

Transitional prisoner arrested in Pomona after walking away from El Monte program

Folsom Prison inmate was on the loose for five days – until someone recognized him
An inmate who walked away from a minimum-security housing facility last week at Folsom State Prison was captured Tuesday in Rancho Cordova after a violent struggle.
