Statement on the Passing of Former L.A. District Attorney Robert Philibosian

Los Angeles, November 13, 2023 — The Association of Deputy District Attorneys acknowledges the passing of former Los Angeles County District Attorney Robert Philibosian with deep sadness and a heavy heart.

Robert Philibosian was an iconic figure in California’s legal and political scene, leaving an indelible mark on the legal community and beyond. His unwavering commitment to service, his dedication to mentorship, and his steadfast love for his family defined his illustrious career and life.

After earning his law degree in 1967, Robert Philibosian initially pursued a career as a corporate headhunter. However, his true calling led him to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in 1968, where he embarked on a journey that saw him rise to the position of Head Deputy in charge of the Van Nuys branch in 1979. His leadership and passion for justice were evident throughout his tenure.

Philibosian’s impact extended beyond Los Angeles County, as he was appointed Chief Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Law Division from 1979 to 1982, overseeing crucial criminal appellate prosecutions and spearheading initiatives against consumer fraud and antitrust issues. His dedication to public service reached new heights when he assumed the role of California’s Chief Deputy Attorney General in 1982.

In 1982, Robert Philibosian was appointed the Los Angeles County District Attorney, succeeding John Van de Kamp. In this role, he actively shaped the legal landscape of Los Angeles, advocating for vital causes such as toxic waste disposal, environmental law, consumer protection, and antitrust enforcement.

Above all, Robert Philibosian cherished his family. A devoted husband to Nancy Philibosian for nearly four decades, he remained a dedicated father and a cherished grandfather, with family always at the center of his life. The Association of Deputy District Attorneys joins the legal community in mourning the loss of a mentor and friend. Robert Philibosian’s enduring legacy will continue to inspire us all. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.
